Photovoltaic O&M service, a challange for performance optimization


One of the main challenges of the global photovoltaic market is to ensure the profitability of solar systems over time. The photovoltaic o&m service becomes crucial here.
O&m means (we have already mentioned in this blog) Operation and Maintenance, but this abbreviation includes all the services that ensure maximum efficiency and maintenance for the photovoltaic system. Over the past few years, o&m photovoltaic plant owners’ investments have fallen, and this, coupled with the decline in public support for solar policy in many mature markets, has created a number of issues related to plant efficiency and return on investment.

The importance of relying on a leading photovoltaic o&m company will be one of the crucial aspects in the near future to make the difference between a profitable photovoltaic plant and one that will not guarantee the investment made.

But how can one verify that a photovoltaic plant is inefficient or respectful of productivity expectations?

The most effective way is to do so through the Kpi (Key Performance Indicator) indexes that monitor the progress of a business process and in this case the efficiency of a photovoltaic system. The main problem in the photovoltaic market is that there are currently no standardized Kpi for the industry. This void has adverse effects for both o&m companies, as well as for photovoltaic plant owners.

  • For photovoltaic o&m contractor this lack of standards entails greater costs, since service providers are often forced to spend money to assess the condition of an installation as part of the delivery contract. The confirmation is also coming from a recent interview with a photovoltaic o&m Sales Director: Luca Tosi (interview available here) “The information we receive from the plant owner or supplied by the previous o&m Contractor is often not accurate and reliable” and yet “Data they are not reliable for most of the time.”

  • For pv plant owners, failure to standardize involves greater economic commitment and a greater amount of time spent on resolving efficiency issues.

Photovoltaic o&m services costs could be reduced by having standardized Kpi, releasing the only value that is being considered to date to measure the performance of the o&m contractor: energy production.
